Although Clarence Carter was blind, he was educated first attended the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind and earning his bachelors' degree in music at Alabama State University in 1960. Born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, Carter professional career with a local friend, Calvin Scott. The pair cut several recordings before coming to Fame Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Recording Company, in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The duo broke ties when Scott thought it was fair when he was involved in an auto accident and Carter should pay half of Scott's medical bill.
Clarence Carter first genuine hit came in his April 8, 1968 recording of "Slip Away". From there, it was all "up hill" for Clarence Carter.
