Slaid Cleaves wrote this song for returning veterans. Not satisfied with the lyrics, Cleaves worked on the song off and on for a few years. It wasn't until a friend mentioned that some returning veterans seem like "they're still fighting the war" that the song finally came together.

Slaid Cleaved nails it. He's one of the most underappreciated songwriters in America, singing a great song about some of the other most underappreciated Americans-those who sacrifice so much for us.

Men go off to war for 100 reasons, but they all come home with the same demons. Everyday i want to go back...

Give a lifetime (half-pay) pension to every U.S. military member who did one honorable tour of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. You can raise my Social Security tax to pay for it.

Profound. My happy ending is broken dishes and slamming doors. Not the life I wanted when I came home, but it's the one I've been living. Thank you for this song.

I've been sharing this song to help raise awareness of vets returning with PTSD. I think it should be talked about more, they're not gettin the help they need.

...made me cry...My husband (10 years) and brother are both disabled USMC veterans. As a military spouse (now veteran spouse), I carry the weight of many stories from Marines who will always be affected by their deployed moments. Not all wounds are visible. Families are affected, too. **********Be kind to veterans & their families**************

Absolutely outstanding. My wife and I are retired Navy officers living across the street from Jim Morrison and we are eager to meet Slaid and enjoy his special brand of music at the upcoming North Shore Concert in Jim spacious backyard.

I am a gulf war and iraq war combat veteran, airborne infantry. I was injured January 08, 2008 by a roadside bomb that left me deaf in both ears and damaged my spinal column. I was medically retired in 2009 due to that day on route tampa. I am still dealing with the VA juggernaut for care. Thanks Mr Cleaves, your song stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it. God bless you and thank you for speaking what so many of us wish we could say with your special talent.

Wow! Very powerful. Desert Storm Marine, I had to medically retire from my job as a Police Officer due to PTSD. I'm still trying to live everyday. This song nails it.
