Skeeter Davis sings 'The End of the World' live at the Midnight Special on April 6, 1973.

The song was her biggest hit in 1963 and of her career. Reaching #2 on Billboards country and pop charts,#1 Adult Contemporary Easy Listening hit and #4 hit on Billboard's rhythm and blues (R&B) chart. A remarkable achievement since nobody has done that before. Lyrics were written by Sylvia Dee in memory of her father and the music by Arthur Kent.

Lyric:

Why does the sun go on shining

Why does the sea rush to shore

Don't they know it's the end of the world

Cause you don't love me anymore

Why do the birds go on singing

Why do the stars glow above

Don't they know it's the end of the world

It ended when I lost your love

I wake up in the morning and I wonder

Why everything's the same as it was

I can't understand no I can't understand

How life goes on the way it does

Why does my heart go on beating

Why do these eyes of mine cry

Don't they know it's the end of the world

It ended when you said goodbye

Why does my heart go on beating

Why do these eyes of mine cry

Don't they know it's the end of the world

It ended when you said goodbye

I'd normally make some comment about how the world has changed 50 years on ... but it would be pointless ... all we can do is cherish the great songs and singers and our memories ...

I Never knew any other song that go so deeply into a teenager's love feelings as this one. Every time I sing it in my shows I feel like crying! It was really like the end of the world the first time for me too! these things you never forget no matter what age you are.

In 1987, I had the pleasure and honor of working for 5 weeks with Arthur who wrote this song. He was my musical director and orchestra leader for a show I was directing.Amazing does not even to begin to describe Arthur. Fun to be around, but very reserved. The definition of a the ultimate professional.Would not play End of the World no matter how many times, or how we pleaded with him. A true pro, and completely unflappable. Can't say enough about him as a person or professional. If anyone is interested, I can tell you how he came up with the title.

No puedo entenderlo, no puedo entenderlo.

Growing up, I loved Skeeter Davis so dearly. She was such a sweet example of "goodness" for us teenagers...no sexy persona nor nasty words...she was beautifully simple...and such a sweet role model for all of us young girls. She was truly a lady!!! We danced the night away to this gorgeous song!! Thank you for posting it. Brings back sweet memories for all of us.
