Yes, it's Spanish from the 16 century. It was atributed to Mateo Flecha, who is from Catalonia (not Catalana) But there is no consense about this point. The language is standard Spanish from that time (not just Catalonian Spanish). Riu, riu, chiu means nothing . It's the same thing with Fa, la, la, la, in English Christmas carols.

I'm Spanish and this is definetely Spanish. This song comes from the Upsala Songbook. (16 century). By the way, this version is the same version sung by David Arcghuleta and has some wierd changes in word stress. It's a modern arrangem ent and in my opinion not very good. If you want to listen to a wonderful version search for the Calendas Maya version (Or m any others).

The Monkees version is simple and lovely. But this is absolutely NOT that version. It is it's own, Sixpence None the Richer version, and is delicious and magical as well. This song doesn't need comparisons. Both are valid. And whichever one you prefer is up to you, because it just comes down to preference and not objective quality.

It's ancient Spanish from Catalana (dates renaissance era in 1540's) The "Riu Riu Chiu" may throw you off thinking it's Portuguese, when it is actually meant to mimic the sound of a nightingale.

@alejandro199614 Uhh, it's Spanish. And Portuguese doesn't have any Spanish words. It has Portuguese words, that are similar to Spanish and vice versa.
