Thank you Rosetta! Another version I like is by Roscoe Holcomb, the late KY banjo picker and original source of "the high lonesome sound."

The Bronsons

Someone on Twitter (thanks @liam_lavelle) just sent us a link to this film of Sister Rosetta Tharpe playing possibly the coolest blues venue you could imagine. Apparently (thanks Wikipedia this time) the film dates from May 1964 and was made at the disused railway station at Wilbraham Road, Manchester. It's raining (of course - it's Manchester) and the band are playing on one platform while the audience members are across the tracks on other platform. "Not bad for a woman," she says at one point. Talk about understatement.

Anyone know what time period this is from? The crowd looks like it's maybe the 40s or 50s?

this is the "gospel music" i loved and remember hearing in my old neighborhood(1960s). now if she was to duck walk across the stage like chucky, or bounce around spastic with her "gibson S G" like angus(ac-dc), or played with her teeth like jimmy, or behind her back like stevie, or heaven forbid break up her equipment like P.T. from "the who", then maybe.....¿and how did she tune her guitar? because when she ends a song i notice she strums her strings. this is not the "E,A,D,G,B,E" you hear george(the beatles) and many others make when checking to see if its tuned? R.I.P. sister...

I had never heard of this woman until today. My life was barren and without.
