recording from the Sean Nos Nua documentary

We were homeward bound one night on the deep

Swinging in my hammock I fell asleep

I dreamed a dream and I thought it true

Concerning Franklin and his gallant crew

With 100 seamen he sailed away

To the frozen ocean in the month of May

To seek a passage around the pole

Where all poor sailors do sometimes go.

Through cruel hardships they vainly strove

Their ships on mountains of ice was drove

Only the Eskimo with his skin canoe

Was the only one that ever came through

In Baffin's Bay where the whale fish blow

The fate of Franklin no man may know

The fate of Franklin no tongue can tell

And Lord Franklin among his seamen do dwell

And now my burden it gives me pain

For my Lord Franklin I'd sail the main

Ten thousand pounds I would freely give

To know Lord Franklin, and where he is.

For anyone wondering this is from the extras on the DVD of her live performance 'Live in Dublin - Good Night, Thank You' which supports the CD title Sean-Nos Nua (her best in my view). The extras are worth the price alone because we get to see/hear her and the musicians talk about their inspiration and experience in Ireland during the recording. I picked it up for $6.99 from Amazon and it is better than any DVD I own based on the content. The production values are great but for a few minor audio flaws yet it is a must own for a fan of Sinead and the musicians who work with her.

What Sinead says about singing acting and inhabiting a song is absolutely true; and what Donal said happened to Sinead in "revealing" the song, happens to me all the time.. I can get so caught up in tany given song, that I can hardly sing it..

I totally agree.. I am ever more moved each time I hear her sing..Tto sing so clearly while sionging so softly and yet still carry that emotion, never becoming "maudlin'" or over -sentimental..wonderful I love her soul

NUNCA LA HABÍA ESCUCHADO. ES LO MAS BELLO QUE PODRÍA IMAGINAR CON SOLO VERLA. SENTIMIENTO CAPACIDAD DE EXPRESIÓN Y BELLEZA FÍSICA ÚNICA. Y MUCHO MÁS Y MÁS. MI ESPOSA DICE QUE BONITA Y DULCE, TODO TIENE ESA NIÑA.

whoops. Dint mean to vote ;-> It's not Renbourne's arrangement, and it's not Gaelic. "Lady Franklin's Lament" (a.k.a. "Lord Franklin" "The Sailor's Dream") (Roud 487) (Laws K9) is a broadside ballad indexed by George Malcolm Laws, commemorating the loss of Sir John Franklin's British Arctic Expedition of 1845. It may have been published as a broadside as early as 1852, allegedly written by Jane Griffin (Lady Franklin), Sir John's widow.

she is wonderful, and has a remarkable voice. but I wish she's known the song before - perhaps it would have kept her faithful to the original lyrics.

I'm so sad she's ruining this divine voice. I'am afraid this gift is lost forever and that's too bad for all of us, I mean, I really think her voice is (was?) a gift to mankind...

Beautifull piece! Thanks for uploading! The only thing I don't really like is that she smokes! Too bad! Does anyone know if she stopped?
