"SIMPLE"

Simple is the track that sparked Yum Yum into existence.

This is where it all began for the duo as they near their second EP release in just under a year, deciding to release a video choosing Simple from their old EP because they can.

This exceptional track features Canadian rapper/multi-instrumentalist Danilo Ray and uses the sample of Little Milton's version of 'The Thrill Is Gone' originally written in 1951 by Roy Hawkins.

Sydney based photographer, Priit Siimon came on board as their chosen filmographer, filming in the middle of Chinese New Year 2015 in Sydney's Chinatown. Coordinating the same scenario in Canada, Danilo filmed his bit in minus degree temperatures for their Chinese New Year, and the resulting contrast is visually enticing, with an array of colours rich in culture and vibrancy.

Natalie Slade wrote the lyrics about how we as human beings tend to over complicate what could have been something simple.

It's not that often you hear a special side note from producer's so Jayo's put together a few words with how "Simple" came into fruition.

"In 2012, I was travelling around the USA and was completely musically inspired. In New Orleans I began refining my own production set up, building everything into one box… Simple is the first product from my new set up where I play the MPD with one hand, organ with the other and while doubling a drum break on the decks, I could catch the loop with a foot pedal.

The track is a sample of Little Milton's version of "The Thrill Is Gone", a minor blues originally written in 1951 by Roy Hawkins and Rick Darnell. The song has been re-recorded with great success by BB King, Aretha Franklin, Jerry Garcia, Manhattan Transfer, Willie Nelson and countless others. Even MC Hammer has a version!

In April 2014, I met singer and actor Patrick Chong Nee at a Funkdafied event in Chippendale and he was looking for a producer to record with. We listened to a few tracks and he picked out (and re-named) this one now known as “Simple”. Patrick took the beats away on a USB and didn’t contact me again, but did pass on the beats to a new vocalist in town, Natalie Slade.

A couple of weeks later, Natalie contacted me saying she had written to the beat and asked if I wanted to hear it. I loved it straight away and knew we were on to something special.

Although Natalie and I loved the track we thought it would sound fresh with a rap. Canadian rapper, Danilo Ray was hanging out jamming with my flat mate. I was so impressed with his mic skills that I asked him to do a verse. It's a shame for the Sydney music scene that he had to move back to Toronto. He is a genius - he raps, sings, plays guitar and keys and produces dope tunes. I’m sure we will get to hear more from him in the future.

So with that, this is “Simple”. Where it all began for us.

With gratitude, we want to thank Priit Simon for the extraordinary work on this video clip. Priit has an incredible eye for photo and film as well as a mad passion for hip hop and soul music… we still can’t believe that this was his first attempt at shooting a music video clip! "
