Hello darkness, my old friend

Ive come to talk with you again

Because a vision softly creeping

Left its seeds while I was sleeping

And the vision that was planted in my brain

Still remains

Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone

Narrow streets of cobblestone

neath the halo of a street lamp

I turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light

That split the night

And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw

Ten thousand people - maybe more

People talking without speaking

People hearing without listening

People writing songs that voices never share

And no one dare

Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools" said I."You do not know

Silence like a cancer grows

Hear my words that I might teach you

Take my arms that I might reach you"

But my words like silent raindrops fell

And echoed

In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed

To the neon god they made

And the sign flashed out its warning

In the words that it was forming

And the sign said: "The words of the prophets

Are written on the subway walls

And tenement halls

And whisperd in the sound of silence."

''.....silence like a cancer grows......'' for some people is true. When I want to convey a clear message to anyone, especially those who hurts me, I keep silent for a long time. Believe me, drives them nuts and can even harm them in the worst way, rather than any other word you might say....

To HumanE2177F..I've NEVER made a comment on the internet before (and I remember when it was created) but your comment: "Yesterday's music stirs my soul. Today's music turns my stomach."...well...they're T-Shirt worthy! As a singer I know there are some good "newer" songs but their purpose and conveyance lack the depth and passion that the 70s...ish...music had.

Point is- this song means one thing to you, one thing to they who wrote and sang it, and another thing entirely, well maybe not entirely, to me. Some common ground here I'm sure. Great songs do that. Define a time, define a culture, define our being yet still continue do these things to thousands (millions?) of people.

Good point! I just used it as a relative comparison to chicken salad. But you are right- comparing most of today's "music" to chicken poop unjustly sullies it.
