1990 (Appearance on Des O Connor Show)

Shirley recorded and released this song on her 1991 CD titled, 'Keep The Music Playing'

ABOUT this song:

Wind Beneath My Wings may have originated in 1972 by a gospel group called the Mighty Clouds of Joy on their self-titled album. Evidence of this is needed. However they did record the song in 1992 on their album Catching On.

Wind Beneath My Wings was later recorded by Sheena Easton in 1982 for her Madness, Money, & Music album. It was not released as a single by her record company, although she performed it on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, her HBO live concert special, as well as her NBC television special.

It was later made into the title of a country (later pop) song re-written by Larry Henley and Jeff Silbar.[1][2][3] The second recording was in 1982 by Roger Whittaker. It was then covered by Colleen Hewett in early 1983 with Gladys Knight doing another cover later that same year. In 1987 it was recorded by Perry Como, and two years later by Bette Midler. Knight's edition was a Top Ten country hit, and it won the Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association Song of the Year awards that year. Midler's was a Number One Billboard Hot 100 hit which also won her a Grammy Award in 1990. "Wind Beneath My Wings" was performed by Bette Midler for the soundtrack of the film Beaches and became a U.S. number-one single. It was named Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards of 1990.

Shirley recorded and released this song on her 1991 CD titled, 'Keep The Music Playing'

LYRICS:

It must have been cold there in my shadow

To never have sunlight on your face

You were content to let me shine

You always walked a step behind

I was the one with all the glory

While you were the one with all the strength

Only a face without a name

I never wants heard you complain

Did you ever know that you're my hero

And everything I would like to be

I can fly higher than an eagle

'Cause you are the wind beneath my wings

It might have appeared to go unnoticed

But I have it all here in my heart

I want you to know, I know the truth

I would be nothing with out you

Did you ever know that you're my hero

And everything I would like to be

I can fly higher than an eagle

'Cause you are the wind beneath my wings

Did you ever know that you're my hero

And everything I would like to be

I can fly higher than an eagle

'Cause you are the wind beneath my wings

You are the wind beneath my wings

You are the wind beneath my wings

A beautiful renditon of "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Shirley Bassey. I think Dame Bassey does an excellent job with the song, but I also enjoy Bette Midler's version. No need to compare. They are both first-rate vocalists.

I personally like this song, and also enjoy and appreciate the different artists who have recorded and sung it live. It was written with a mid-tempo beat but was changed shortly after to a ballad. But, within the ballad genre, I have found that each artists gives their own stamp to the song, and I have liked every version I have heard, including of course Shirley Bassey's version. But, I'm the glass is half full type of person...

I first heard Sheena Easton do the song in 1982. I was blown away. Far as I'm concerned, Bette Midler's cover was overdone, dragged out and she had to improvise because she had no range. I don't understand why every cover since Midler did it is a copy of her version. Especially when they are far more talented singers. The song is supposed to be a broadway show-stopper sung with every ounce of energy from the bottom of your toes. BTW, pianist Sue Keller has a nice version she sometime does live.

I won't make any judgement against any other version, but Shirley's vocals are outstanding here!

You are correct that a lot of people have recorded this song, but people think it's Midler's song because she had the biggest hit with it. However, Lou Rawls first had a hit with this song in 1983, and scored a top 10 hit with it. Gladys Knight & the Pips also scored a lesser hit in 1983. Bette's rendition came out in 1988, and any song associated with a movie (Beaches) tends to do very well. Shirley's rendition was simply a track on her 1991 LP; it's not a single, & hear she sings it live.

Virtually everyone tries to cover Bette Midler's lousy rendition. This one included.

Beautiful rendition. Listen to Australian Colleen Hewett's as well. So different but so beautiful.

My dad loved Shirley, but mum didn't. So as a joke, when mum sang this song she sang "wind beneath my feet". (Smiles). Great memories!! This is for you Dad!!. xxx
