The First time I heard Shirley Bassey's voice (except for Goldfinger) I was at a Gay pub in Greenwich, London. I didn't know who she was. I thought that she sounded a bit like a mish mash of Dinah Washington, Lena Horne, Eartha Kitt and Nancy Wilson. I've been listening to her ever since. At 76 years old, the fabulous Shirley Bassey is still hitting and holding those big powerful notes, and thus vocal consistency over 55 years in the business is just one more reason why she is the best. As Long As He Needs Me from the musical 'Oliver' was an early hit for her in 1960. Enjoy!

Thank You for the comments.

The seemingly endless stream of wannabe singers who show up on the X-Factor and suchlike seeking overnight stardom with average voices at best would do well to listen to this track to truly understand how to deliver a vocal performance - no frills, just quality!  The only one who comes anywhere near Dame Shirley's vocal class or could even attempt to sing this beautiful show-stopper is Sam Bailey and that's why she won.

Shirley Bassey's recording of this song reached number five on the UK charts and became one of the highest sellers of 1960 staying on the charts for 30 weeks. This recording is from her EMI Columbia box set. Thanks for sharing your story, it was very quaint.

What album did this version of the song come from? This song is beautiful and this rendition by Shirley Bassey is so moving. The first time I heard it, some family members and I were vacationing in London and we stopped off at a quaint little café in Highbury. The cafe played this recording and even though we were familiar with Shirley Bassey's songs and style, we had no idea who the singer was, until told by the proprietor. It made our trip all that more enjoyable. Thank you for posting.

Wow, that was beautiful. I really love Dame Bassey, however my favourite rendition of this song is still the version of Judy Garland. Shirley's version of 'Big Spender', 'I am what I am' and of course 'Diamonds are forever' are in my opinion a few of her best songs.

Have you listened to my post of Georgia Brown singing this song? It's really good, she sang it originally.

She is actually 76! and still hitting and holding the notes as I witnessed recently in Hamburg - simply the best!
