@wehitandrun Wyatt didn't 'cover' it. Costello and Langer wrote the song *for* Wyatt and Wyatt recorded it first. Costello recorded his own performance of it the following year.

reason he sings this is because he's from Birkenhead and there is/was a big shipyard there (Cammell Laird) - tribute to a lot of his friends who worked there

You can call me dumb, however I've clearly schooled you - with no little eloquence and a proud display of musical knowledge. You, on the other hand, are confined to one sentence replies. @cutandpaste1 Barely true, and something you'll learn about music when you grow up: timbre, tone, feeling. It's a beautifully nuanced performance, in my opinion, and he's singing to music that was not written by himself, therefore not for him. Also, Elvis Costello is not simply 'the singer' but a world renowned writer/musician/performer. This is not opera!

@middaymoses Because fools like us elect them. Not me personally, I'm from Sunderland and experienced first-hand what Thatcher's decimation of heavy industry did to communities, and i would rather eat my own scrotum than vote Tory. However, we've got a pretty bleak choice here in the UK.
