The story is easy... The guy was drunk to the point he doesn't remember anything from last night. His 2 brothers were laughing at him and said "It must have been an evening of joy!" which wasn't the case cause in fact, they buried their little sister Hope. That's why he feels guilty and have regrets about that.

Ofcourse it's about drinking and hangover. The quip about "joy" is sarcasm... Since, you know, drinking is happy activity with friends and whatever.And it might have been wonderful night and nothing bad happened and still you feel guilt and regret and you feel like shit and you don't remember all and maybe in those moments you don't remember you fucked up. Well how do you explain how he doesn't remember what happened last night, and his "brothers" laugh and say it must have been a joyful night? if you tell someone you can't remember last night and they tell you it must have been a joyful night, what other scenario would that be except for that alcohol was involved?

So you know a lot about this band? I know sentenced have songs about drinking but this is not one of them. Go listen to the song "The River", that is a song about drinking to forget your problems, but "guilt and regret" has nothing to do with hangovers or alcohol for that matter. But like I already said to the other person, everybody has their own personal interpretation. You are trying to make it that which you would like it to be. But don't trick yourself - it is what it is.

Guys and girls, the song is about hangover. You had an evening of joy, full of "hope", and all that's left is Guilt and Regret in the morning. "Pale as ghosts reeking of compost, yet most I abhor their bloodshot eyes". Guilt and Regret tease him "Do you recall anything from last night.. No?". Of course not, because he drank too much. Hope for "some female company" is lost. Buried. It's not that complicated, you just need to be old enough to visit a bar to understand it.
