Scud Mountain Boys cover of Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" from there "Pine Box" album..

Lyrics:

I was born in the wagon of a travellin' show

My mama used to dance for the money they'd throw

Papa would do whatever he could

Preach a little gospel, sell a couple bottles of Doctor Good

Chorus

Gypsys, tramps, and thieves

We'd hear it from the people of the town

They'd call us Gypsys, tramps, and thieves

But every night all the men would come around

And lay their money down

Picked up a boy just south of Mobile

Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal

I was sixteen, he was twenty-one

Rode with us to Memphis

And papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done

Chorus

I never had schoolin' but he taught me well

With his smooth southern style

Three months later I'm a gal in trouble

And I haven't seen him for a while, uh-huh

I haven't seen him for a while, uh-huh

She was born in the wagon of a travellin' show

Her mama had to dance for the money they'd throw

Grandpa'd do whatever he could

Preach a little gospel, sell a couple bottles of Doctor Good

Chorus

Very interesting cover. Hats off to the Scud boys for putting a completely different spin on the classic original. It's pointless comparing it to Chers version, this evokes an entirely different set of emotions and a completely different listening experience. As, in my opinion, a good well executed cover should do:)

Sorry to be Negative Scud Boys ...Besides being dreary as hell this slow,,, I'm a musician and cover this song and As A Male,I change the lyrics..so it's more a narrative ALL the way through.. This version makes NO sense if you listen.. What the Fuck ?

guys and girls, don't compare it to cher. Cher owns the song, obviously, this is just a different take, appreciate it for what it is - a darker, moodier version. They would not have copied it had they not had an apreciation for the original themselves.

The Cher version is half as long and twice as good

How can anyone say this is better than Cher's version? I mean, c'mon. I think I may have just died listening to this dead version.

@daviddowns81 I ju. Ast want to say how great it is that musicians can take one version of a song and completely create there own rendition that throws a whole new perspective to the original, or any other remixes of the song, in my opinion it will procure new feelings in any person who has heard a separate, or original version of the song.

@sanford9850 Same tyhing happened to me with Tegan and Sara's cover of Dancing in dark. I couldn't figure how I missed how good the lyrics were.
