i disagree, dins. Tom Waits is like GOD to me, however i feel "ice cream man" was topped by Jay. all day long. it's simply a matter of personal preference for each individual.

Actually I learned that very few people know abot this, the record where Tom W had not smoked or bended enough whiskey to get the voice we after that and now know him for! Love Jay but still Tom's version can not be outdone infact that whole first album is so spetacular that it remains his most outstand work ever!

I love the racial comments. Go to Lead Belly's "House of the Rising Sun" and read folks complaining about white musicians ripping him off while hurling racial insults to the people pointing out Lead Belly didn't write the tune, in fact originated in England 100s of years ago and first recorded by Appalachians. All I know is when CCR recorded "I Put A Spell on You", Hawkins wasn't complaining when those checks came rolling in and millions of kids were introduced to his music.
