From around 1985, give or take a year. Glasgow traditional group "The Whistlebinkies" play a medley which I think was called "Broderick's Bodhran"*, after bodhran-player Mick Broderick [RIP]. Posted in memory of Mick, who was singer with the band for many years, but whose forte was as a hilarious raconteur of outrageous stories. You don't get characters like Mick in the Scottish folk music scene any more, more's the pity.

[* - not 100% sure about this - if anyone knows otherwise, please correct me. Thank you. ]

The Whistlebinkies' players here are Rhona MacKay (clarsach); Eddie McGuire (flute); Mark Hayward (fiddle); Rab Wallace (Lowland pipes) and Mick Broderick (bodhran)

Thanks for your thoughts on our late founder Mick. These are two reels - designed to be played in sequence - composed by The Whistlebinkies piper (seen here) Rab Wallace around 1978. The first, starting slow then speeding up, is 'Andrew Wallace' - composed by Rab to celebrate the birth of his son. The second reel is 'Broderick's Bodhran - composed in honour of Mick's drum. Listen out for the bass line in the second reel - which creates minor seventh chords in the first part and a minor ninth chord at the beginning of the second part. The set was first recorded for the group's 'Whistlebinkies 2' LP album released by Claddagh Records (Dublin) in 1980. The overall title of the set was "Broderick's Bodhran".
