Deanna Durbin, at age 18, singing Franz Schubert's masterpiece. Here is what Schubert had to say about this song, in a letter to his father:

"My new songs from Scott's 'Lady of the Lake' especially had much success. They also wondered greatly at my piety, which I expressed in a hymn to the Holy Virgin and which, it appears, grips every soul and turns it to devotion."

Ave Maria

Gratia plena

Maria, gratia plena

Maria, gratia plena

Ave, ave dominus

Dominus tecum

Benedicta tu in mulieribus

Et benedictus

Et benedictus fructus ventris

Tuae, Jesus.

Ave Maria

Ave Maria

Mater Dei

Ora pro nobis peccatoribus

Ora, ora pro nobis

Ora, ora pro nobis peccatoribus

Nunc et in hora mortis

In hora mortis nostrae

In hora mortis, mortis nostrae

Hail Mary,

full of grace,

the Lord is with thee;

blessed art thou among women,

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,

Jesus.

Holy Mary,

Mother of God,

pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

I met a young girl at the gym today. She introduced herself as Deanna. She informed me she was named after Durbin , a favorite movie star in her mom's time. She was unaware that Durbin was also a great singer. She had no idea of Durbin's great career. Granted she's young and Durbin was well before her time. But all she has to do , and it will take all of 5 seconds , is type in YOUTUBE---Deanna Durbin... and a whole new world will open up for her. I wish that could happen to me.

One of the greatest female voices ever. Pity she lived in the early days of film and recordings. Perfect intonation, breathing, phrasing and rhythm. What more can one want?

For some reason she's not known as much as Garland. Deanna was better.
