I agree with your preference for the Dubliners/Luke Kelly version, this rendition was immediately disappointing from the outset for me although it may be ok if you don't know any other versions. This has Sony (the record label) soiled right through it and that is definitely a bad thing.

I am amazed that someone in Ireland has not got hold hold of all the tapes from Gaybo's shows and put together some compilation CDs and DVDs. There were some amazing performances over the years and I, for one, would love to hear them polished up, digitised, re-mastered etc.

I'm not sure this is meant to be such a pretty song....much prefer Luke Kelly's version...or indeed the recent rendition by The Low Anthem & Chieftains on Voice of Ages.. I love Ewan and his music I've been a fan for years....but he was a man of his time....he rarely wrote about the work women were doing while men were catching shoals of herring, digging roads etc. Schooldays Over...was simply about the transition from boyhood to manhood - school one day ...mines the next ...that's how it was..
