Sartorial Eloquence was released in the spring of 1980 on Elton John's 21st studio album, 21 At 33. I really love this album (and the other tracks that came from these recording sessions (which ended up on Sir Elton's next album, The Fox, the next year), and Sartorial Eloquence is maybe the best song on the record, though I think they're all great. (Sartorial Eloquence just might have been a hit if it had been titled "Play This Game" or something less a mouthful....even being very familiar with the track I sometimes have to think to associate the title with the chorus line "don't you wanna play this game no more"....of course "Sartorial Eloquence" IS a great title, it just kinda gets lost....just sayin'.) I literally played this cassette to death back in the day and it's associated with some great memories.

This was one of those cases where when I was making the video, some imagery also seemed perfect for another track that I wanted to do by the artist, so that will probably be my next Elton John video. Until then....hope you enjoy this one.....and THANKS FOR WATCHING! :-)

As always HUGE THANKS to everyone who's art contributed to this new art....THANK YOU!!!

[Lyrics]

You've a certain sartorial eloquence

And a style that's almost of your own

You've got the knack of being so laid-back

It's like talking to the great Unknown

You've got a self-sufficient swept-back hairdo

Pretty certain that you've got it made

Oh your life-style shows in the clothes you chose

Sitting pretty in the masquerade

Sing it

Don't you wanna play this game no more

Don't you wanna play no more

Don't you wanna play this game no more

Don't you wanna play no more

You remain the only main contender

Though you never, you never meant to lose at all

Down at the mouth yet unsurrounded

Adamant before the fall

Though when you go you know I might be lonesome

But I'll keep it under close control

Go and get your kicks and babe let's call it quits

I believe I'm feeling indisposed

Don't you wanna play this game no more

When you go you know I might be lonesome

But I'll keep it under close control

Go and get your kicks and babe let's call it quits

I believe I'm feeling indisposed

Elton John was the soundtrack of my youth. His music was my refuge when things got bad and it also supplied the pieces that I played at both my first and last piano recitals. After "Rock of the Westies" I moved on to listening almost exclusively to classical music. But I was influenced here, too, by Elton. I developed an abiding love for Beethoven thanks in no small part to Elton's very energetic keyboard playing. (I think that old Ludwig van would have loved the way that Elton attacks the piano in concert.)Then a few years ago I saw Elton on MTV Unplugged and I was reminded just how good he is live. I started looking up his post 70s output and found "Sartorial Eloquence." It has become my favorite Elton John piece, successfully dethroning my previous favorite "Someone Saved My Life Tonight."I like this remastered version a lot. I just wish that I could find a good live version of the song.

No matter how useless the noises and sounds of "psychobabbling gibberish" becomes out of the more popular "male" Pop & Metal artists throughout America and Britain, we'll always have the music of "that day," and from *"That Voice!"*. . .as I had dubbed him long ago, since the western days of "Caribou Ranch, Colorado."

Excellent - love this video - many thanks for creating & uploading. If you ever have chance to do requests; Elton's Sugar On The Floor, Snow Queen & The Retreat very under rated songs that would be perfect

The game named vanity fair is what I see in your video. We owe sir Elton John a lot of respect and pride to be his contemporaneous. You did it for us, MGM, many thanks! (Y) X
