I'm not sure, but I think the name change occurred after the limelight had gone (and perhaps after some soul searching). I remember reading years ago that his ego had gotten out of control; and as a result, no one wanted to work with him; band members quitting, etc. A real shame.

He really did [does still] have a BAD ASS voice. It's just that his exceeding arrogance about how deserving he was of fame and recognition that turned record execs [and fans alike] that hindered his fame from enduring. I always have dug his awesome voice. This one was always my favorite.
