Salute! Great song for Memorial Day. Know it well, seen it felt many times.

Consider that Prine was only 24 years old when he recorded this song. Wise beyond his years, still is

Prine is one of those guys I'd been hearing about from friends and acquaintances for years, but I had never taken the time to actually listen to even one Prine song until I ran across this a few years ago.Dayum! Now, I know what all the fans were talking about.Wish I'd known sooner.

As a child my dad played this and 6 o'clock news on the guitar and at the big ears part he'd reach out and flick my ear. As I grew I held the song dear but didn't listen to it as much when I got sick and went through the chemo they had me on dilaudid (sp?) That they put into the port to help with the pain when I finished chemo the dilaudid was cut off and I was sick for a few days till a "buddy" "helped" me and gave me something turned out it was heroin and I fell in love with it. I went to visit my father and asked him to borrow money for my habit and he played this song for me again I cried so hard because it is so true. I type this sitting here with 2 years of being away from it and anytime I want to use I play it to remind myself

"There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes, Jesus Christ died for nothing I suppose." Damn that's a good line.

"The Other Side of Town" would be a good one to add.

Extraordinarily powerful, and still so tragically relevant....maybe even worse.

My cousin was a Sam Stone. Four tours in Veitnam. Never got off the drugs and stayed in and out of trouble his whole life. Found him dead in dumpster when he was 60 years old. Never got his life on track after that damn war.

I remember this "conflict" and we lost a lot of good men, either their lives or to drugs they never knew.
