The Salvation Army Song - Judy Henske, performed Live somewhere, some time in the sixties. This was always a favorite with drag queens who used to mime to this selection. But straight or gay, you can sing along -- and have fun doing it.

I owned this album back when it first came out. Un-fortunatly I lost it along with others. Shame on me.

It was a regular (and probbly still is) on WFMT's Midnight Special with Rick Warren. That's WFMT 98.7 FM in Chicago, and they stream! (I am not affiliated, only a sadly addicted fan!)

Thanks so much for posting this. I found this album in a record fair years ago and it had a tremendous impact on my career as a vocalist. My copy was signed and it said "Here I am writing something clean. May you both be everlastingly pregnant with celestial fire. A fat pink cloud. All the best, Judy" Referring of course to her stage commentary. One of my most treasured possessions.

Judy appeared in the early 60's in a "coffee house" in Oklahoma City called the Buddahi. Many nights she appeared with Hoyt Axton. A great memory. She had a "great set of pipes." I bought a couple of her albums but she disappeared. About once year I see Steve B., the Buddahi's owner son. He told me she is happily married in California for about 30 years now. I wish her the best. She seemed to really enjoy performing.

Does anyone remember what movie it was where a woman did this in costume, on a street corner, and as I recall said Mo**er Fu*in'* drum at the end?! Maybe the "Don't Stop it..." mvies or one like that?

I caught Judy Henski's performance at Mother Blue's on North Wells Street in Old Town, Chicago, and she was explaining why she didn't do The Salvation Army Song anymore, something to do with not being up to her aesthetic standards or something like that. It was obvious, though, that she had been "persuaded" by something of a more substantial nature. She put on a great show, in any case.

I was a kid about 9 or 10, and my older siblings had "High Flying Bird" and the Whiskey Hill Singers albums. Her version of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" is what sticks in my my. "The Salvation Army Song" is great, especially live. Some fifty years after first hearing her has given me perspective. Judy is essentially a blues/jazz singer, and a great one. If Electra had seen this early on, instead of just riding the folk craze, she would have had a much longer run.

In the seventies at the gay bar Unicorn in Baltimore, Captain Jack used to do this song as part of a drag show and dress as a Salvation Army lady. It was great. He used to make a few bucks during the chorys when the whole bar would throw nickles and dimes at Jack. Most trying to hit him. He was a beloved patron and I iss him and those times.
