When you are nearly famous it's always hard to get any respect off TV presenters :) Sade has some awkward moments in front of a crowd of band supporters from Hull when asked about Pride and her backing band. Sade was formed by Pride members Paul Cooke, Stuart Mathewman, Paul Denman and of course the singer Ms Adu. Andrew Hale had not joined the band at this stage, this video features the original line up aka The Martini Boys, Paul, Stuart & Paul:) My Sade Story Part 1 now at #Amazon

To re-cap ‘My Sade Story’. The singer in October 1983 transferred without my knowledge the rights of the RCA sessions and recordings to CBS on the 19th October 1983. Including songs such as Smooth Operator & Your Love is King.

The producer Robin Millar and his engineer Mike Pela sampled my drums in the RCA sessions and then in November 1983 without my knowledge used a Linn drum and a session drummer to re-create some of the songs such as Cherry Pie et al in isolation from the rest of the band?

In January 194 the singer Sade Adu sacked me from the band and gave me an invoice for work done in the studios sessions as if I was a session drummer. This was in consideration of her contract with CBS Records. Further to this in 1996 I was represented by the record company as a session musician on some of the Sade recordings for Diamond Life?

In 1984 I performed with my former band Sade on the BBC ‘Top of the Pop’s show performing the drums for ‘Your Love is King’. The singer Sade Adu represented the band Sade as five members of the group signed to Epic Records her record company.

In 1985 the record company Epic Records removed my drums on Smooth Operator for the video track. I was replaced on the video by John Rose who was later convicted of drug dealing in the same year. A non drummer. My drums had been re-performed by a session musician called David Early.

In 2001 or thereabouts the band Sade re-recorded Smooth Operator in The USA removing my drums once again and creating a new version of the song that appears on ‘Sade essentials’ product by Sony.

Undeniably the singer was the genius behind the bands success and the remaining band members have just been along for the ride not really contributing anything worthwhile to date..

My conclusion on Sade after being involved with the band and writing a book on Sade generally is that there was an element of genius in the singer along the lines of that within most famous artists, Dali, Picasso and the like who had a genius for artistic endeavor but also for self promotion and building the brand etc. I think in the design world she could have been even bigger but never got the chance to realise that ambition, her art through music was somewhat restricted by the partners she met as she didn't have that natural ability to play an instrument, she wasn't a musician but an artist and this was conveyed in her writing and presentation mainly. I came to this conclusion from re-recording the drums fro Cherry Pie the original version and the song metering and composition was in fact genius and could only at the time have been attributed to her. Given that she had lost the original producers and band members in 1985 when she blew up, she could have been a lot bigger but had to rely heavily on all concerned to do what she needed to do and I guess never took the risk, they restricted her in a lot of respects. I think a new broom being introduced on the second album, say with Quincy Jones producing or someone of that caliber and higher level musicians would have seen her rise to greater heights as such, but this was never introduced and the music to be honest remained mediocre throughout. She had a lot of potential but was let down by those she associated with due to their mediocrity even though they have spent a lot of time in the preceding years shouting about how great they all are, they in fact contributed to her mediocrity in the end. If the manager Lee Barrett had dumped the singer in Sade when he put us with Andrew Hale and his friend we would have been one of the first 80's boy bands

Sorry for the 5 year delay DCFlava74 funnily enough George Michael had a habit of coming to all our early gigs and was banned by our manager from seeing us as he had a habit of ripping off everybody's ideas:) Production wise it was the theme at the time generally though. Had a lot to do with the time, and also the equipment we had to work with and also the process that was very much along the lines of early 70's music than what we know today. For example I had to play my drums from start to finish somewhat unheard of today in a recording studio:)

Yeah Cali I formed the band Sade with three other musicians from Hull in 1981 read My Sade Story at Amazon. I used to really like Helen until she got the deal and took a solo deal and all the advance monies £60.000 at the time and went to a beach in Spain for a holiday. All downhill from there with major fraud on all fronts by the singer, took them all to court in 96 and also 2004 so its been tough to get any recognition for me starting the band in the first place? Didnt even get a writing for my song Snakebite that was created in my early jazz group PSP with Mathewman and Denman?  I used to drive her to rehearsals when her car broke down and also to the hairdressers:) Sad but true but Helen got everything on a plate early and she just owned it after that as she had all the cards.

@PaulCookeMusic Sade is a band not a solo, a band that has good singing, musicianship and songwriting not a singer whose main talent consist of showing of her ass and tits and sing about fucking and whining into a microphone instead of singing.
