Die Yamato war das größte Schlachtschiff ihrer Zeit mit 263 m länge und einer breite von 38,7 m . Auf der Yamato dienten 2767 Besatzungsmitglieder . Sie sank am 7 April 1945 Nördlich von Okinawa 2498 Männer starben dabei.
386 Trägerflugzeuge griffen sie in ihren letzten gefecht über 2 Stunden hinweg an [ zum Vergleich Pearl Harbor wurde von 350 Kampfflugzeugen angegriffen] .
Die Schlacht von Midway hatte die Yamato ebenfalls miterlebt .

Dieses Schlachtschiff verfügte über eine Hauptbewaffnung von neun 46cm Geschützen in drei Türmen, die Granaten mit einem Gewicht von 1460 Kg maximal 44 km weit schießen konnten. Noch auf 30 Km Entfernung durchschlugen die Geschosse 410mm Panzerstahl, auf 20 km sogar 560mm! Ihre eigene Panzerung war dabei so ausgelegt, dass sie gegen Beschuss aus 46cm Kanonen auf 20 Km Entfernung immun war und Torpedosprengköpfe bis 300 kg TNT aushalten konnte.
