Some folks disliked Ryan changing the gender pronouns on the record. In general I prefer covers that keep gender pronouns true to the original either way. Yet here I think that Ryan changed the pronouns not to simply be about any girl but to be about a particular girl. His ex-wife Mandy Moore. His changes tend to describe a girl that HIGHLY resembles Mandy Moore in both physicality and personality. Take into consideration that “1989” is in a lot of ways a break-up record, the fact that Ryan LOVES Taylor’s songwriting, and it adds up that maybe one of the reasons he related to the record and chose to cover it was to help him deal with his failing marriage/broken heart (no pun intended). So he changed the pronouns to reflect his personal life/connection to the original record. Just a theory but Ryan Adams does not strike me as the type of artist that would alter pronouns just to be heterosexual. In particular if you consider his LOVE or rather OBSESSION with “The Smiths”. Morrissey wrote about intimate and romantic relationships with both men & woman in a time when it wasn’t as widely excepted. And from one Smiths fan to another, to hear someone sing about non-hetero relationships in a time when it wasn’t often done, was very empowering. So I think Ryan changed the gender pronouns to relate to his own life. Which is pretty cool and clever IMHO.

If Harry Styles covered this song (which never would because of the complications) he'd sing it like this and it'd sound so good, like Harry would sound really good singing this song
