This is an old-time fiddle tune known by many names, but it is definitely not Miss McLeod's Reel (even the chord structure is completely different.) The name Seneca Square Dance probably derives from Fiddlin' Sam Long's 1926 recording. Sam ran square dances in SW Missouri, where Senca MO is located. Sam may have known the tune but not the title (not unusual!), and so he named it for a place where he learned it, or perhaps where the crowed loved it. (Westphalia Waltz got named in that fashion.) Other names, perhaps more in keeping with the Civil War, include Waiting for the Federals, Running from the Federals, and Georgia Boys.9 years ago
