I was a 16 year old high school kid working as an usher at the local movie theater when "Love Me or leave me" came to town. I think I became a Ruth Etting fan right then. :)

What was it about her voice that recorded SO well with 1920s technology? The piano sounds like it was recorded in 1927, the voice sounds like 1955...

Oops, I meant to type "others who WROTE the songs". Typing too fast with stuttering fingers and not proofreading isn't a good thing. BTW I love listening to the songs of early 20th century from Scott Joplin, Al Jolson , Ruth Etting etc. It's pretty, singable, infectious in a positive way. Hey, Stephen Foster, from way back when does it, too. Can't say as I want to listen to a lot of this year's offerings. Thanks for your comment, CatsPjamas1. Enjoy that wonderful music and great voices.

Hi. Sorry you thought it was serious, the commentary about sophisticated, etc. No, it's classy and classic. I guess my attempt at sarcasm fell short. DeSylva, Brown and Henderson and the others who the songs recorded by Ruth Etting were masters of their craft. We have lost so much in the way of music in many ways due to technology. Hopefully we've gained something, too, but extremely popular music doesn't reflect that. Much that we hear of today's music won't survive as classic.

I wouldn't call it unsophiscated. I don't know how you feel about modern pop music, but you surely can't call the output of Katy Perry, Justin Beiber or most of the others sophisticated.

These types of songs and this simple music are things that aren't written these days or if they are they don't get anywhere except as rare novelties. Even B;way shows don't feature tunes of this type and style. These songs are appealing, it's true, but too corny and unsophisticated for today's audiences, You'll just have to enjoy this music and the voices as 'blasts from the past".
