Thanks for this. I run inclusive music sessions in care homes for older people and often discuss songs and music after. One of my clients asked if I knew this one. She only remembered the first line. I said I would search on the net at home....lo and behold you have a recording here. Will show her it next time I visit. She will be so pleased!

Hi, I had an old movie on the TV called Man Wanted starring Kay Francis and dated 1932. It was on the TCMHD channel (Turner Movies). It's Jan 14, 2014 and it was on around 11AM EST. I was practicing my speed cubing (Rubik's cubes) and wasn't really paying any attention to the TV until I heard that song come on. Kinda gets yer heart. I got up and tried working it out on the keyboard (piano), but I was missing a section. Anyway, thanks for posting it. Sure is a pretty little thing-great melody-great hook. Did you notice the time signature change from 6/8 to cut time? I'll be 69 this year.Richard

I'm not trying to argue with you by any means here, but to be honest, hip hop/rap does have meaning to it (depending on what artist it is) just like any other genre of music out there. And even though there isn't a "melody," the producers spend hours and hours looking for samples from old songs such as this and give the song a different spin. I like the old stuff, not this exactly, but the Doors are my favorite band. But what I'm getting at here is that you can't judge rap by Lil Wayne/ 2chainz

I'm almost 72 & I'm still blown away listening to the music of my mother and father. What happened to our country's people's loss of the desire for real music? It's gone. Rap & Ska & HipHop are not music; there's not even any melody. Meaningful lyrics and melody make good music. Rap & HipHop are all profanity & anger. Even the DooWop music of the 50's and 60's was music.

You are so kind, I grew up with my grandparents so I was brought up with this great music as well. I wish more people would give it a chance too.

Hi, it was the line "Trying to smile once and a while, but I found that so hard to do". That's all he knew so I had to search long and hard on Google to find out which song it was. When I found it the song title just seemed so apt, as that's what Dad has been doing since Mum passed away last year. Strange thing is, Dad still maintains he had never heard the song before.

I'm 30 right now, which I suppose isn't very old - but I've been watching 1920's/1930's movies since I was a young teenager. I've also been listening to the olde-time music just as long and haven't heard these recordings. I KNOW I've heard her name, and possibly have heard her sing, but was/am not as aware of her as other singers. So I'm really not surprised that so many people aren't seeking her out. Also likely they don't know her name, or don't know the song title...

Or as my brother used to sing: "I"m dancing with tears in my eyes because the boy in my arms is a girl."
