In 1928, Ruth Brown, the most-recorded female R&B singer of the 1950s, was born in Portsmouth, Va. Her total of 87 songs for the Atlantic label between 1949 and 1962 surpassed the number of songs recorded by such other Atlantic artists as Ray Charles and “The Drifters.” Brown’s first record to top the R&B charts was “Teardrops From My Eyes,” in 1950. She died on Nov. 17, 2006.
