In USSR in 1936 was already created a State Jazz-Orchestra. Soviet Jazz of Stalin's times was a little bit symphonized, some part of repertoire was based on USSR national (Russian, Ukrainian, Caucasian etc.) songs.

Te recomiendo la lectura de "Otra vision de Stalin" Ludo Martens, desde un punto de vista marxista. Si no tambien la obra de Domenico Losurdo "Stalin: Historia y Critica de una leyenda negra". SOCIALISMO O BARBARIE, VENCEREMOS!!!!

i'd have thought massive orchestras costing the equivalent of millions of dollars which was usually composed by fairly well-to-do people able to afford harpsichords and things would be the decadent music. remember jazz was the creation of an oppressed people...

Was this the Swing Band that was Stalin's favorite around '41? He attended and praised the band during the war; gave it material backing. Then he dumped it and the bandleader when it looked too "bourgeois" at the beginning of the Cold War around '46. The leader of that band had a long correspondance with either Louis Armstrong or Jimmie Lunceford; I don't remember. This is fine work. Reminds me of '30's Goodman (naturally!).

Yosel, Yosel is a Jewish song (and Tsfasman new his Jewish songs, he was swinging a lot of songs from Odessa). It was the best, if not only, jazz band in Russia at that time, and his interpretations of songs were great!

Well, it's not truth that the swing music, or american music, were allowed in Soviet Union. In despite of the economic block, the estatal discographics edited many Occident artists' records like The Beatles or ABBA. They don't like too much copy the american music, but they aprecciate it, and play it with their touch and cultural influences. They don't like mainstream music, what they judge like decadent (and they were in the good way).

Did Solzhenytsin write "The Gulag Archipelago" just out of his own imagination? Even Khrushchev admitted the crimes of the Stalin era, not to mention Gorbachev, and almost every reputable historian--including most Marxist historians.

Sam Wooding's Orchestra traveled as far as Moscow during their European travels in the 1920s. Then of course all the swing music being performed all over Europe in the 30s it's not surprising that an occasional recording would pop up in the old Soviet Union back then. No matter what the official party line was.
