Song: Totem

Artist: Rush

Album: Test For Echo

Year: 1996

Record Label: Atlantic Records

Lyrics:

I've got twelve disciples and a Buddha smile

Garden of Allah, Viking Valhalla

A miracle once in a while

I've got a pantheon of animals in a pagan soul

Vishnu and Gaia, Aztec and Maya

Dance around my totem pole

Totem pole...

I believe in what I see

I believe in what I hear

I believe that what I'm feeling

Changes how the world appears

Angels and demons dancing in my head

Lunatics and monsters underneath my bed

Media messiahs preying on my fears

Pop culture prophets playing in my ears

I've got celestial mechanics

To synchronize my stars

Seasonal migrations, daily variations

World of the unlikely and bizarre

I've got idols and icons, unspoken holy vows

Thoughts to keep well-hidden

Sacred and forbidden

Free to browse among the holy cows

That's why I believe

Angels and demons inside of me

Saviors and Satans all around me

Sweet chariot, swing low, coming for me

they call Neil Pert the professor for a very good reason being a drummer he will always be my idol. truly a brilliant song with so much depth. The changes and variation of Pert's beats with Alex's Riffs makes the song truly remarkable. Rush is hall of fame material and will forever be one of my all-time favorite bands

My favorite song on TFE, for sure. I really hope they dig this one out for the R40 tour, because I don't think they've ever performed this one live.

I always forget about this song until I hear it again. I consider this to be the start of Lifeson's "Dark Decade" where he abandoned his trademark solos; as a guitarist that really leaves me feeling like there's a hole in most Rush songs from this era. Still great musicianship, but notice the lack of a guitar solo anywhere on the album? I did!

Alex dominates this song. Incredibly groovy riffage during the chorus - and his tone on this album is...remarkable (so I'm remarking on it). It's shiny and gritty and the same time (my language for musical description is obviously underdeveloped).

A fantastic forgotten classic. Love the theme and the musical shift - kinda hearkens back to Different Strings, no?

Rush is the pop culture prophet playing loudly in my ears for over 30 years and I've loved every minute! Test For Echo had such a positive vibe and feel, I played this CD over and over again on my way to Toronto to tour the Rush sites! Totem was a unique way to express faith and influences of positive and negative thinking and feeling: angels, demons, saviors, satans. Totem is another testament to the lyrical genius of Neil Peart.

It really shouldn't matter what time signature the song is put in to derive its complexity. You can write equally complex riffs in 4/4 as in12/8 or 6/8 etc. and rush started off using odd time signatures and maybe they're just trying something new. they evolve all the time and do what they want with their music.

As a Christian, I feel totally at home calling Rush my favourite band - and they have been for over 20 years. Free will, free thinking, intellect, creativity - all gifts from God, and their importance is highlighted magnificently by Rush.

I'm a believer in Jesus Christ, and Rush is my all time favorite band.

most rush fans don't believe in God (not to mention most christians don't listen to real music).....legit fans of the band and their entire discography are free thinkers that can understand and learn from history (google "crusades" and read about how christianity started, spoiler alert- it was very bloody)

Ok we get it...Neil doesn't believe in God. Does it have to be in EVERY song?!?
