Rufus Wainwright performs Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in Niagara Square, in front of Buffalo's City Hall, on July 3, 2004.

Recorded with the video mode of a Kodak DX6490 EasyShare camera by my girlfriend. The camera does have a great 10x optical zoom, but she also went and stood very close to the outdoor stage. In fact, at 1:26 you can hear her tell someone else in the crowd (who was complaining that she was standing there so long) "I'm recording," and at that moment Rufus looks right at her!

Thanks everybody for watching, and come check out my other videos!

The man oozes talent, although not his best performance as I think he's a bit shit faced. Mmmm beer.

Amazing amazing amazing. I know this was so long ago, but I'm looking for the Rufus Wainwright and Ben Folds version of "Careless Whisper" from this exact show (8+ years ago and I still remember how epic it was!). Do you happen to have it?

@videofan006 "Holy dove", actually, is the original lyric. You must have recalled wrong. Anyway, I am also somewhat disappointed at his treatments of this. Cohen, himself, and Jeff Buckley are my fave's. With all the hype over this, i was surprised. I do appreciate Wainwright's original songs a great deal, and some of his other interpretations, as well.

@CptRFP Haha, you talk like your opinion is the be all and end all. You can hate this all you want. I don't doubt that you hate his voice. But that's just your opinion. Taking it one step further and criticizing others for disagreeing with you is, sorry, just plain ignorant. You ever hear the phrase " Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"? Well, that is very true. Especially with art. Your, better than thou, attitude is pretty sad. It undermines your opinion and makes you look foolish.

If it were not for him not being able to accept greatness as we can see it but rather steal form a master and try to put his sign on something he could not possibly create. Greatness Mr. Wainwright is also to honor these who were here before you. You have a lot to learn yet, and perhaps then... one day we could see yours. So far you hurt many just to push your pride up, how stupid. Nice voice is far not enough to become a great one like Leonard who hapened to create this great piece of music.

Unfortunately I cannot give this great song of our master Leonard both thumbs up - and it is precisely due to how Rufus treated this piece of true art. He wanted so much show himself, he did not care of true words and their meaning. What was supposed to be a "holy duck" for him. For many, and for all who know this song for so many years the holy ghost has a very meaningful presence in this part of the text, but no, Rufus wants so much to point his point of view he carelessly replaces ghost...

My God what an awful interpretation of the material. His voice sounds like broken glass, hard, rasping...just wrong for the song. Sorry, that so many of you think this is good shows to what depth artistic appreciation has fallen. Drunk? Maybe. Butchered it, definitely.
