I agree with you Mr Erickson - Rufus's sardonic, world- weariness is just what this classic requires - love that he's speeded it up and brought out the gypsy/hispanic lyricism. Also, love the vocal range he adds to Cohen's version.

What a wonderful interpretation of this song. Just the perfect feel. I love Rufus' voice and stage presence.

Leonard was feeding sausage to the baby birds? Well... that's a evolutinary breakdown. If I ever get eaten by a flock of birds, I know whos name to curse :D btw, amazing cover.

By the way, Leonard Cohen himself loves Rufus's interpretation, also saying the Wainwrights have brought his work back to life. As for ' gayness' even being mentioned...talent is talent, regardless.

This is my favorite version of the song. The inherent sarcasm of the song, basically calling a spade plays out perfectly in Rufus's rendition... Speaks volumes, especially in our current age of political, social and economic piracy. Love it. Good job Mr. Wainright.

rufus wainwright should be ashamed of this. sounds like a bad lounge act on river street in savannah. lame. total butchery of a brilliant song.

Leonard Cohen is an amazing songwriter. He says so much with few words. Loudon Wainwright III kicks ass. Not crazy about Rufus.

So many derogatory comments concerning Wainwright's cover! It's different - it's an interpretation and a cover that doesn't attempt to sound exactly like the original. For those wanting the gravitas and the particular Cohen feeling of the original song, then listen to the original song.......just a thought.

I must sadly agree. It does pain me to say that I dislike Rufus's voice - always have - because I really love the voices and talent of the rest of the Wainwright family, so it's odd for me to not like his work. The style is wrong for this song, even insensitive for him to camp it up this much. It has little to do with his mannerisms, far more to do with the whiny, nasally tone, which is inescapably distracting.

He makes it sound like a show tune. Don't care for it.
