On this day in 1971 {March 20th} Rufus Thomas performed "(Do The) Push and Pull - Part One" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...At the time the song was at #37 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, that would also be it's thirteenth and last week on the chart, two weeks earlier it had peaked at #25 {for 1 week}...And on January 31st, 1971 it reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart...Between 1953 and 1976 the Mississippi native had fourteen records on the Hot R&B Singles chart, five made the Top 10 with one* reaching #1, the above "Push and Pull"...Rufus C. Thomas, Jr. passed away at the age of 84 on December 15th, 2001...May he R.I.P.* He just missed having a second #1 record when "The Breakdown" peaked at #2 for 2 weeks, and it was "Spanish Harlem" by Aretha Franklin and "Stick-Up" by the Honey Cone that kept it out of the top spot...

I remember the very first time I ever heard this... Cool Oldies WKOO Jacksonville, NC, 1991... I was 20, Lance Corporal, USMC, NEWLYWED... I understand that Rufus Thomas held a record of sorts with this song. As of 1971 (the year I was born!), he was the oldest #1 singer ever. What's the accuracy of that statement?I don't give a damn either way, this bad as HELL!rip Rufus! OOOWWWwwww!

I remember this dance. This was the jam. Push & Pull.  Rufus gave us quite a few dances.  The dog, funky chicken, breakdown, funky robot. He was an old man with a young heart.  Love your music.

One day I came home from school and my mom had found my record and pot stash OK and when I was walking up the steps I heard this song , I was like this cannot be coming from my house because my mom only listened to gospel music . and she was playing my records .I told her you're not fooling anyone . And she turned it up.
