Apparently Roxy Music's "Both Ends Burning" was inspired by a bout of food poisoning Brian Ferry suffered on the '75 tour. Watch the video if you don't believe me

Saw Roxy play this tune live in Manchester (UK) in 1975 it was all about the brilliant musicianship / showmanship of Eddie Jobson and Bryan Ferry's excellent delivery and charisma. Roxy soon became mainstream after Jobson's departure as he migrated to his true calling in the Progressive Rock arena. Great version of this classic tune from Siren.

One of the many great songs that are all about drugs.

@Ruadhán J McElroy you just sound silly, axe to grind? Don't try to rationalise it away by making a distinction between singer and front man, no one cares. His voice and delivery worked for the artist group he fronted. You don't need to justify that shit, or try to denigrate it on some totally irrelevant external "singer skill" scale which is even more irrelevant when discussing what is, after all, a rock group.

But they still sold out venues for decades with virtually no airplay, much like the Cure.

XTC still stand as one of the best bands of their time. They would not play along with Virgin's intentions for them, which meant fans have not really gotten much from them. English Settlement and Skylarking are amazing. Talking Heads Remain in Light is in my top 20. Gang of Four--superb agit-pop at its best. And not too many people give Ultravox the credit. Great band.

Roxy often don't get the credit they deserve like Bowie--who certainly was a huge influence, and having snatched Eno for his superb trilogy he really owes something to Roxy himself. I liked the sharing of styles all around.

More Than This and Jealous Guy were big in my native Canada, and Dance Away also caused a minor ripple. I think Canada got them just a bit more than the US. That was a very stagnant time in America. They were all for Journey and Kansas. Not awful bands, but nothing to really say--Wow! Innovative. Just a different time, I guess.

They pretty much set the tone for the 80's. Between XTC, Talking Heads, Ultravox(!), Duran Duran, The Cars, Police, even Gang of Four and a lot of the britpop acts of the 90's and now take hints from Roxy, it's a shame that only Love is the Drug made an impression in the US... could use a little more diversity like the UK

No, they weren't but they were pretty good--and at least they had taste. They knew Roxy and Bowie were excellent influences.

Dialtone

no, they sure weren't. Roxy was way ahead of their time and influenced so many bands of the new wave and new romantic era. I mean, Duran Duran REALLY drew from Roxy Music and so did The Cars.
