We all know that he does that special kind of singing, the critic insists on rebuking him, but nobody sings with so much feeling as Rolando Villazon. He touches me more than a lot of other singers who do that 'perfect technique' and seem to be cold as ice. Unfortunately, this emotional kind of singing, which is so important, gets rare. Anna Netrebko is a good example. She's more perfect than any other soprano in these days, but she's just cold and artificial. Thats so sad.

I heard Villazon live back in 2002 as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, and thought he had a lot of promise. Somewhere later he went off the beam, singing with bad technique and ending up with nodules on his vocal cords. He had an enforced time off from singing, but when he returned, nothing appeared to have changed, and he has gone on singing with the same bad technique. I agree with those who say that in this particular video he sounds terrible. His coloratura technique especially is not good at all.

His pronunciation appears strange to me. Caruso never formed his lips in this manner.I like the interpretation of a then 20-years old tenor named Silviu Mihaila better. AYPXSQtNK84

He also sings this in a rather low tessitura for a tenor which makes it a bit dull. I heard him as Don Carlo in the beginning of his career, it was already clearly audible then that his voice and technique were underdeveloped although he got rave reviews. But most reviewers don't really notice these things at all.

Well, you do seem to really want to hate these modern attempts towards baroque, since I could find your claim in other videos of renditions of this aria... So I won't argue any further.

Wow, it wasn't nearly as bad as you claim it was. Yes, somewhat out of style, but quite effective, and this was written for a castrato, so one can expect only so much. I'd be more worried about the tempo.

I am not sold on the performance of the Largo at all. He sings wide open without adducting the cords. I think that singing this rep. is a mistake for him. He is such a great personality, and at one point had such great promise. I hope that he can get back to that point, though I fear that this will not help him.
