Great song. If you like this, find Roger singing 'Not in Nottingham' from the Disney movie 'Robin Hood'. You have to watch the movie clip to hear it because it never came out on disc, but I think it's his all-time best of a wonderful portfolio.

Was he singing about Whizzo or Torey?(You have to be from Kansas City to figure that one out.)

back in the 50's-60's in GR Mich we had a yodelling cowboy who had a Saturday morning kid show.he was corny but a very kind person.his Palomino died and he was heart broken.Bob Barker flew him to supposedly be on Truth or Consequences.when he got to the show they presented him with a Palomino.it made him cry on national TV.

Roger's little laughs and commentary during the song remind me very much of Melanie Safka's style of singing--very endearing and humorous.

I just read that Roger wrote this song for, but obviously not about, his friend actor Doug McClure. I looked up the song to see what it was about, I see it was inspired by a real life character, Tori Southwick.

An extremely unique country-western talent, and the only composer-singer I can put into the same catagory is Jerry Reed. Thank you very much for this posting...

Roger Miller was and continues to be a legend of innovation and uncompromising talent. He and his kind are sorely missed in the entertainment industry.

Like most of Roger's best songs, they were inspired by something that either happened in his life, or happened to know first hand. Yes, he knew about Tori Southwick, and wrote the song with him in mind...only the way HE told it, this was more about "doing your own thing" {and enjoying it} rather than being a part of the drab, "normal" workaday world, making "higher wages" and its "meaningless" perks- why should he be a "soldier of industry" when he's already the "King of Kansas City"?

I love the re-recorded version from 1990 better!
