They both do a great job on this song but this song is so fantastic and so beautiful that I think anyone could sing it and it would be good...even Dwight Yoakum.

Re the elmar9 query on the bass player. It's Byron House. The groove between drummer Buddy Harmon and Byron is incredible.Terrific backup musicians on this performance. Makes it so easy for Emmylou and Rodney. This video is a keeper. It has to be one of the best versions ever of this great song. Thanks for posting it!

I think I was saying in my post, to which Nitropost kindly replied was that I love Emmylou, particularly with Hot Band and of course with Rodney Crowell (I agree those two should have got together years ago; even now the chemistry scorches the stage.) I also liked her with the Trio even if some of the songs were over-sentimental. She is the epitome of "cool" to me. She has more than held her own for decades in a man's world. However, I was not having a go at Linda for not wanting to tour any more. Far from it. I love Linda and well understood why she got tired of touring. I am with Nitropost that she did it as long as she could. She started out very young and her song choices (to me anyway) spoke always of an intense longing for roots. Also she had adopted children. I don't know how long the illness was a factor. I wish her well.

Agree whit everything, but your post was sadly before Linda's diagnosis. Yeah, keeping going is the way to go...as long as you can, think she did it as long as she could. Just hope she takes it as easy as she can and no more songs, 'cause she gave more than most.

I never thought of it like that but you are right. She is beyond cool. Nothing like our modern concept of cool. She just keeps on delivering. I am no fan of country but I am a fan of Emmy-Lou. I remember seeing an interview with her, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. Dolly still loved being on the road, Linda was "just beyond tired", having started at 16 and Emmy was just a "road dog" and she so is and I so admire her for it. Being "cool" is not being 18, it is keeping going.
