1974. Written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin, especially for Rod Stewart. When it appeared on his "Smiler" album it had turned into a duet with Elton John, with Rod and Elton singing the whole song in harmony with each other, and Elton pounding the hell out of the piano keys! Great rock and roll history!
Incidentally, Rod and Elton have been friends since the sixties (before either of them were famous) and have worked with each from time to time. They were both inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Yeah, he talked about this in the "To Be Continued" booklet. According to EJ, Pete Townshend called Elton up after Rod had turned it down and asked Elton to do it! Elton really should have referred Peter back to Rod, but...11 years ago

Always believed it was EJ on piano. Checking now, the site "allmusic by Rovi" - Rod Stewart "Smiler" album - credits - it lists Elton John as guest vocalist and keyboardist. "Discogs" site also lists album credits and shows Elton as piano on this track. Pretty good evidence :-) I have to confess that I don't have the original RS album on this one. This recording comes from a CD compilation called "Elton John Songbook". Thanks for raising the question. I'm confident it's EJ on piano!11 years ago

While it sure sounds like Elton playing the piano, it is credited to Pete Sears. Anyone have proof that he's doing more than singing on this?11 years ago
