Lawrence Fewell Roberts II was born on November 23, 1940 in New York City. He moved to the Pacific Northwest as a child, his family settling in Tacoma, Washington. He started his singing career in the late '50s with Little Bill and the Blue Notes, but the Wailers quickly stole him away as a featured vocalist.

In 1960, Rockin' Robin Roberts happened upon a copy of a 45 by Richard Berry in a record-shop bargain bin. He played the flip-side, a song called "Louie Louie", and liked it enough to add it to the band's live act -- blunting the Latin/calypso-influence and turning it into an all-out rock 'n' roll song for the first time. Roberts would eventually record "Louie Louie" with the Wailers, shrieking the immortal ad-lib "Let's give it to 'em, RIGHT NOW!!", which was to become such an integral part of the eventual hit version.

Robin was in the Marine Reserves from 1962 to 1967. He graduated from University of Puget Sound in 1964, and attended Oregon State University, working on a Biochemistry degree, from fall of 1965 through the summer of 1967. He then moved to San Francisco and worked for Crown Cork & Seal Company.

Robin Roberts was killed in an automobile accident early in the morning of Dec. 22, 1967, in San Mateo County. He was the passenger in a car going the wrong way on the divided freeway.

RIP Rockin' Robin

Wailers originated this long before the Kingsmen recorded it and they got all the credit

i think both the kingsmen and paul revere and the raiders both heard the song first performed by RRR and the wailers. of course, the kingsmen had the big national hit with the song.

I believe I first heard Louie Louie at the Pacific Motorama Custom Car Show in Vancouver, B.C. in 1963 or '64. It sure went nicely with the cars. Now I know a guy named Louie and can play the song for him on my sax.

The only version that matters. I used to see them at The Spanish Castle when I was fourteen. The two car clubs The Federal Way Sultans and the Auburn Gear Lords would beat the shit out of each other as we watched in awe.

Yep. In the 60's a lot of guys I played the song with would play the major chord and I would have to straighten them out. It really grated my ears to hear me play the minor on keyboard and the guiatar player play a major. And don't even talk about the bass player doing a minor run because the bass players I played with back then did good to play the right timing with thier one notes. LOL. May be the reason I took up the guitar later. LOL.

I like the guitar picking here. Almost chicken picking.

Motorhead plays the wrong chords. The 5 chord is" minor." Their version does rock tho'.

Motorhead's version tops all!

Good, and much easier to decipher the lyrics than the Kingsmen's, but I have to say the Kingsmen version is my favorite. It's just classic.

'Nother Pacific Northwesterner? Excellent! Yes, all those bands (plus Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and all the other grunge bands of the '90s) are just part of what makes the Northwest Great. :)

I've always thought the Rockin' Robin Roberts version was definitive, as much as I love the many others.
