ROCKIN' CHAIR

The Band

The Band (1970)

Hang around, Willie Boy,

Don't you raise the sails anymore.

It's for sure, I've spent my whole life at sea;

And I'm pushin' age seventy three.

Now there's only one place that was meant for me:

Oh, to be home again,

Down in old Virginny,

With my very best friend,

They call him Ragtime Willie.

We're gonna soothe away the rest of our years,

We're gonna put away all of our tears,

That big Rockin' Chair won't go nowhere.

Slow down, Willie Boy,

Your heart's gonna give right out on you

It's true, and I believe I know what we should do.

Turn the stern and point to shore,

The seven seas won't carry us no more.

Oh, to be home again,

Down in old Virginny,

With my very best friend,

They call him Ragtime Willie.

I can't wait to sniff that air,

Dip'n snuff, I won't have no care,

That big Rockin' Chair won't go nowhere.

Hear the sound, Willie Boy,

The Flyin' Dutchman's on the reef.

It's my belief

We've used up all our time,

This hill's too steep to climb,

And the days that remain ain't worth a dime.

Oh, to be home again,

Down in old Virginny,

With my very best friend,

They call him Ragtime Willie.

Would-a-been nice just t'see the folks,

Listen once again to the stale jokes,

That big Rockin' Chair won't go nowhere.

I can hear something calling on me

And you know where I wanna be

Oh Willie, can't you hear that sound

Down In Old Virginny

I just wanna get my feet back on the ground

Down In Old Virginny

And I'd love to see my very best friend

They call him Ragtime Willie

I believe old Rockin' Chair's got me

apparently Richard Manuel wrote this song 100% by himself and didn't give a shit about writing credits or royalties at the time...never in a million years did the band imagine Robbie would stab them in the back like he did. RIP Rick, Richard, and Levon!

Someone needs to isolate that Richard vocal track like they sorta did in that making of documentary,

Robbie Robertson proves something very important with this song (and many others) and that is that songwriting does NOT need to be autobiographical and probably should never be. He created characters and the Band sang their stories and they seemed real. None of those involved here had been an old sailor but we can believe that they are. To me, this is worth so much more than some pretentious, tortured soul masturbating over their emotions on their recorded output.

Richard's singing falsetto in the chorus. He goes from lead to high harmony without a hitch. Brilliant. You can hear Levon explain it on the "Classic Albums" DVD; I think the "Rockin' Chair" piece is excerpted here on YT. This may be their greatest song.

From the classic rock era I like Brian Wilson, Clapton, Lindsey Buckingham, Billy Joel, Don Henley (and of course Beatles & the Band). More recent artists I'm into include Elliott Smith, Radiohead, Avett Brothers, Lucinda Williams. You?

I listened to both those songs (couldn't find the live version) and yes he give a great vocal performance in both, I'll give you that :) Although I wouldn't call what he sings in So Bad crooning, more just soft controlled vocals - but great! I would say you have slightly changed my view of him - I still prefer Richard though, and I think he is quite a bit more versatile than Paul. Richard could sing absolutely anything from Rock, Blues, RnB he was amazing. Who else are you into?
