I don't know if oktavist is a "fancy" title or not, but the term itself may be specific to the ligurgical music of Eastern Orthodox churches. However the oktavists have such deep voices that they can sing an octave below basses (as is my understanding) I guess my question was not so much did he sing that form of music, but whether his voice was so deep, and notes so low, that it was in a comparable range as the oktavist singers.

@funchords Scott wrote this song when he was leaving home to attend college in Florida. He has stated in interviews that he was thinking of his grandma when he wrote it..pulling out of the driveway leaving Indiana and his family behind to go to college.

great song, but this video is misleading because you're totally not hearing what they're doing. you're hearing the actual album track. you can especially tell during the last verse when scott sings on top of... scott.
