The only other person I've heard do this w such great baritone is Jim Neighbors when he did a small verse on one of the Andy Griffith shows. The first time I ever heard him sing was on THAT show and I remember falling out of my shoes, I couldn't believe he could sing like that OMG. At any rate, this version is fabulous, thanks for posting. Wow, what talent!!!

In this early recordings everyone can hear that he was the most technical perfect baritone singer of his century (perhaps). Early accomplished! His VISION FUGITIVE is in the opinion of most critics the best ever recorded baritone aria. The second best is perhaps the by chance sung LA STRADA DEL BOSCO, sung by old GINO BECCHI, during an interview. It is standing alone. Also to be heared here in youtube. Most people do not know, that Merrill was unable to speak only one sentence of his own, neither in Italian nor in French language! For me a miracle and nearly unbelieveable.

not Otis lol. It was Gomer Pyle (Jim Naybors). I think I spelled his last name wrong though.

Beautiful and moving love song, sung with great feeling byRobert Merrill. The true story of this song was broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster a few years ago and is based on Lord Arthur Hill (of Hillsborough - CoDown) falling in love with a young lady who was hired by his mother to teach him music.

The orchestration to this is so soothing, so dated. I just loved it.

This song was featured on the Andy Griffith show... I believe that Otis Cambell the town drunk sang it perfectly!!

Thank you so much for posting this gently sentimental touching song - I've always loved it. I don't think there's another good performance of it on YT - at least not one as good as this:) Thanks again!

Wow! One of my favorite 'traditional' songs. Never thought I'd hear him sing it. Beautiful.
