"Shades of Gray" from Robert Earl Keen's 'Live From Austin TX' performance. Buy it today on Amazon http://amzn.to/1bQBuG9 or iTunes http://smarturl.it/RobertEarlLFAT.

Robert Earl Keen is one of the leaders of a new generation of Texas singer-songwriters. Like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and, yes, Willie Nelson himself, his artistry is matched only by an edgy rebelliousness that doesn't quite mix with country music's mainstream, which is exactly why he stands out in the crowd! This August 2001 performance is one of his five on Austin City Limits (his first was in 1989 as part of a "Texas Showcase" featuring four other artists.) His artistry and songwriting are on display for all to hear.

As a I was once a lyricist and vocalist, I am humbly envious of this man's talent, nay, gift.I had the privilege of seeing him live once here in Milwaukee. I have been watching and waiting for him to come back to us for so long.Also. Understand that I am a long-haired, head banging, mosh pit slamming metal head at my core. But in truth, I love music. And I love writing and I love words. REK is probably my favorite song smith of my lifetime. And I am a fan of Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin, Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce, etc.I admit that I harbor envy and jealousy toward REK because he built the most epic song around the line, "The road goes on forever and the party never ends."Any songwriter whose balls do not shrivel at the thought that they did not write that song is not worth their salt as a song writer.

I'm a new fan of REK's, having found him through my Flatlanders' Pandora station. This is my favorite of the songs I've heard (and purchased), though I prefer the slower original recording. He's a great storyteller!

Rich Brotherton, Bill Whitbeck, Marty Muse and Tom VanSchiek are one HELL of a band. REK is the greatest American songwriter next to Dylan imho. I never miss any nearby show.

This is about the Oklahoma City bombing and some Kids getting caught up in the man hunt. REK is an awesome, pathos evoking, many layers story teller. He's kind a new to me - Vince

Though I've know Robert for quite a while... one of the coolest things is seeing someone leave a note under one of his songs saying "I just discovered REK today" or "I've never heard music this good" or something similar from someone just discovering..... good music.

FTR, for those who don't know, the date in this song is very important, along with the part about the helicopters, etc. "These are just some sorry kids. They ain't the ones." tips the meaning of the song.

Used to watch him and Lovett play at Rudder Fountain at A&M when I was a student there. About a million years ago.
