English Translation:

A hundred years have passed

Yet I hear the distant beat of my father's drums.

I hear his drums throughout the land.

His beat I feel within my heart.

The drum shall beat

so my heart shall beat.

And I shall live a hundred thousand years.

I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. It was when TBS did the documentary called The Native Americans. They ran a commercial for the document using this song and it stopped me dead in my tracks. This was back before the internet so it took me awhile to find out who sang the song and to get my hands on the cassette.....yep....cassette tape, believe it or not (eventually got the CD). Till this day this song stirs something in me that I can't quite verbalize. It's so beautiful and still holds up all these years. The ladies in Ulali have great voices and I've loved their music ever since.

This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard. First time I heard it was when Robbie Robertson put it on the soundtrack for Native Americans PBS documentary and performed it on David Letterman. I’m trying to find the original performance that I first saw on David Letterman here on YouTube, and I cannot find it. Maybe I am mistaken and it was not Letterman. If anybody knows what show it was performed on, right about the time the PBS documentary aired, I would appreciate you letting me know because I’d really love to see that performance again. Thank you.

For Carlene Bone Shirt! Rosebud & Pine Ridge, knew her at 13 and she passed from here and flew at 14..HONOR HER!!! FEW DO!!remember CARLENE!, and all who ever knew her, even the bad ones who led her astray, repent, and turn from the black road man!!!Raise your hands high next Sun Dance!, Cry for her in Lodge!Sweat for her!!!Such a loss, and she wanted out too, to sail like Wanbli and Cetan..she asked me to take her west with my family..I refused because of legalities, but should have defied wasichu laws..i will take full responsibility for this, that girl was 13 and 21 at same time, she used to hitchhike from St Francis to Wanbli Pine Ridge, and was gone for days on end..and she begged to ho and knew Lysol and hair spray and muscatel wine was not the answer!! Nor were the Reserves veers at the little drive in past Rosebud town..I know those Rez like back of my hand and why is Carlene gone now? In 2000 her father Carlos Bone Shirt informed me his daughter was gone..I could save a 40 year old woman from the rapids in 1993 easily when she fell overboard, but could not save Carlene?..Anyone on Pine Ridge or Rosebud rez that knew her in 1998 - 99, you know she looked like this, and where are you Melissa??? ANSWER ME GIRL, after all i let you Melissa stay in car with the Ska blouse so you wouldn't get muddy when we got stuck in cornfield shortcut to your home..the rest got out and pushed and we got out..i remember well Michelle Boneshirt with a heart in the mist on the back window you painted girl!!! You were 15..the other 3, younger than you got out and pushed us out, and i saved your shirt little miss Bone Shirt, but i could not save Carlene, trust me, I wanted to, remember??? Even in Washington later after we left her, a little 8 year old begged and was urgent we must go back and get Carlene...but again, all the legal excuses, we cant, no legal authority, possible kidnapping charges..whatever...who cared anyways, even grandma Claudia barely did....St Francis...Carlene was free to come and go, should have just done it, saved her..i am 100% responsible for her loss for failure, and yes i would have had to defy Wasichu laws, but Carlene and her beautiful smile and her spunk and life would still be alive! I am sorry..Anyone on Pine Ridge or Rosebud who even remembers or cares, listen and reply, we must talk, i need to fix a mess...

Pura Fe wrote this song. Ulali sang it. The only thing Robbie Robertson did was perhaps influence the orchestration, since Ulali sings with drums, rattles, and stomps. He added it to an album of his. That's it! I wish you would rename this correctly. It is easy to edit. Just hover over the title & you can make changes.

Robbie Robertson's song called Mahk Jchi caused me to have a very strange dream about myself the first night i heard it, haunts my mind sometimes, can't forget it, but all dreams have messages to help us grow.
