S'Wonderful -- Fox Trot from "Funny Face" (Ira and George Gershwin) -- Ipana Troubadours (Sam Lanin's Land) with Vocal Chorus by Harold Lambert, Columbia 1928 (USA)
NOTE: Funny Face is a 1927 musical composed by George Gershwin, with lyrics by bis brother Ira. It was based on book by Fred Thompson and Paul Gerard Smith. The plot is a sort of "Pygmalion story" done up to date for the jazz age. In the show, a fashion photographer transforms a bookstore employee into a model and they fall in love. When "Funny Face" opened on Broadway on November 22, 1927, as the very first show on the newly built Alvin Theatre, it starred Fred Astaire and his sister Adele . It was in this show that Fred Astaire first danced in evening clothes and a top hat. Originally called Smarty, it first opened in Philadelphia on October 11, 1927 to poor reviews. After the changes, the musical moved to Washington D.C., than to Atlantic City and to Wilmington, before reaching Broadway and the Alvin Theatre, now renamed Funny Face. It became a major Broadway hit, and after 244 performances, the whole company transferred it to London, continuing its successful tour.
