Having listened to this song before seeing the video, my interpretation of it was always that it's the story of someone looking back on when he fell for someone, but they clearly weren't meant to be and he lost all of his friends in the process after pushing them away in favour of the other person.

Opinion; It's God watching over us, he is the "Audience of One" and he basically influences a lot through his religion that a lot of people follow/are forced to follow which therefore is a high power, and illuminati being a supposedly religiously influenced organization that is also supposedly in line or indeed the Government itself, wants to make things awful so we have no choice but to join a New World Order in hopes of improving condition, hence fully having us under their control, also back to another Christian example I saw was the anti gay propaganda where they were not permitted to be married and God uses the government so that things remain in his order despite our unhappiness. Just opinions.
