Yusef Lateef (born William Emanuel Huddleston, October 9, 1920 - December 23, 2013) was an American Grammy Award-winning jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer, educator and a spokesman for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community after his conversion to the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam in 1950.

Although Lateef's main instruments were the tenor saxophone and flute, he also played oboe and bassoon, both rare in jazz, and also used a number of world music instruments, notably the bamboo flute, shanai, shofar, Xun, arghul, sarewa, and koto. He is known for his innovative blending of jazz with "Eastern" music.

I had the opportunity not only to hear him live several times (all brilliant concerts!) but also to learn from him, speak with him, and spend time in his company. These times were among the highest points of my life, and everything I ever learned from him changed my life for the better. I salute him, and thank Allah for his life.

Peace and love - a standard salutation from my husband, Hajji Dr. Yusef A Lateef. His balanced public and private life is a testament of the "autophysiopsychic" focus enlightened from his heart. Please see on youtube - MKA USA January 2014 Newcast: Bro. Yusef Lateef - I'm sharing this in the same vein. Reflect, rejoice, and keep on steppin'!Sister Ayesha

Very saddened to learn of Yusef Lateef's death. He shares a birthday with another musical giant John Lennon.

RIP to Elder Yusef Lateef. I experienced a tremendous premature passing of a great Philly drummer Tony "Stickman" Wyatt who was a mentor/teacher/ and life guide. We are still not fully recovered from his passing because it was so sudden. A tremendous musician who avoided the spotlight all though there are a few videos on youtube to hear him play. Bro. Yusef Lateer was another tremendous musician--what a loss, but we should rejoice in the legacy he left behind. May the creatorguide him and his family.
