I fell in love with this magical song 70years ago and I haven't got over it still. As an Indian I am so proud that Rimsky-Korsakov dedicated this jewel to India.

Sounds like a simplification of "Afternoon of a Fawn" by Debussy. These 2 pieces were composed almost at the same time between 1892 and 1896. Young Debussy learnt from the music of Rimsky-Korsakov and other members of the "Mighty Handful" while being a music teacher for Fon Mekks in Russia in 1880-1882. On the other hand, Rimsky-Korsakov in 1890s was getting increasingly conservative and rejected to listen to Debussy's pieces, saying "Don't make me listen to all these horrors or I shall end up liking them!".

Tommy Dorsey did a jazz rendition of this in the 40s. It was mentioned in "A Catcher in the Rye " by JD Salinger.

Why "song of India" ? Isn't Sadko a Russian tale ?

Sadko is a wonderful vocal work, a sort of opera based on a medieval legend, with "tableaux" instead of dramatic action. The "Song of the Indian Guest" is from a scene where three foreign merchants in Russia describe their homeland, the first is the "Song of the Varangian (Viking) Guest", then this, then the "Song of the Venetian Guest" :…(from Venice, Italy). The Russians think Norway sounds too forbidding and cold, India sounds too tropical and humid, while Venice's climate sounds just about right. So they tell the hero Sadko he should sail to Venice. The Varangian song is my favorite one, although this beautiful one is far more famous, maybe just because of the "swing" version? The Venetian song, although very charming, is not nearly as well known.

How many people have stolen his music? Listen to 'Passage to India' for one. Then try 'Death on the Nile' followed by 'Murder on the Orient Express'. Plagerism!!!???
