I only just found out and I'm really thrown. From the 60's he's been my touchstone. The most moving singer I've known. Miss him. Happily I have digital memories.

I saw & heard Richie sing "Freedom" on stage - way off in the distance as I arrived at Woodstock. I left shortly after that (OK, dumb move, how did I know?) after waiting on line for 45 minutes to use (an already overflowing port-a-potty). I saw him perform a few times since then. And once, back in the 90s, I sat next to him on the New Haven Line in CT. I didn't want to bother him, so I didn't say to him what I should've said: Thanks, Richie, for being the gentle voice of our generation.

I feel somewhat cheated as I never knew of this wonderful singer, but as the saying goes..Better late then never ! and the tears are ready to fall also ...Such a beautiful, gentle and humble voice...Just noticed the coment above saying he was a beautiful and humble human being...Rest In Peace Richie and just to add you may not be with us on earth but you live on in your music and you have a new fan !

I knew Richie Havens back in 1973 when he had his recording studio in the Village in NYC. My boyfriend at the time was doing work on his boat at the 79th Street Boat Basin. We actually hung out with him all that summer. He was a great guy. The first time I ever heard Raggae was on his boat. Richie has gone on to a better place no doubt. R.I.P. xoxo Diane

I got to meet him when I lived in New Orleans. He put on an amazing show then talked to my friends and I for a while. I'll never forget that night. Thank you Richie :)
