It was especially gratifying on that warm July night in 2001 when Richard Thomson graced the Austin City Limits stage, as the eclectic yet elusive tunesmith from West London hardly ever makes it to Texas. Best of all, he brought along long-time bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Michael Jerome. Without dwelling on his excellent fret work (Rolling Stone ranks him in the top 20 of the world's 100 greatest guitarists,) Thompson also has a unique way of writing contemporary songs that draw upon deep traditional genres, whether rock, folk or Celtic. This performance demonstrates his skill clearly.

I think that bass growl is the sound of an open E string being plucked quite hard, but whatever it is DT's bass playing is, as ever, astounding

RT and Danny are the best in the world at what they do. Check out especially the bass growl at 0.39 and elsewhere. Brilliant.

This song hits me on ever level. Great backup..bass is amazing and tight rhythm section. Richard fills this song up so well, just amazing.

You know, lost behind RT's usual guitar/voice/songwriting brilliance and Danny Thompson's spectacular bass work is Michael Jerome's great drumming. All you need to know is that he is comfortably keeping up with (and in part driving) DT's breathtaking virtuosity on this rhythmically complex tune!

@broadpath and @micheleVK - True That! Danny is one of the few bass players you can pick out just from his touch and tone. Very in touch with the people he supports.
